At the risk of sounding controversial, I see many businesses failing. In some few cases, it’s very sad and depressing because “TB’s” (The Businesses) provide something vital or important to consumers. Or they are very well run, diligently caring for employees and customers alike. Or they only vie for moderate profit, ploughing back revenue into quality. I n short, they were looking to the future.
And then there are the “OB’s” (Other Businesses). We all see these types of OB’s. Goods so cheap, they fall apart within weeks or months. Horror stories of how staff are treated. Narcissistic managers & Exec’s with egos larger than the Grand Canyon, only concerned with padding their own personal coffers. Overpriced, overrated, a complaint email address (no phone calls accepted!). But they happily paid outrageous executive bonuses. Their only goal in life is maximising profit at everyone else’s expense.
Take heart ‘O ye of exceptional abilities
Take heart! People may become unemployed during the pandemic but it’s a 2 way street. Many of the worst businesses will in all likelihood, also find themselves on the streets. Having been purged into bankruptcy due to their short-sighted, greedy behaviour. People remember. And once the economy starts “gearing up” again, the good business’s will still be there, refreshed, leaner, smarter, all vying for YOUR skills. And people will not have to consider the OB’s because they will be gone. Poof! Snuffed out of existence because of their own short-sighted views.
I feel great sympathy for those unemployed at this time. And yes, I have seen the cretins who believe this will set back wages with companies “cherry picking” the best only once re-hiring commences. But the “cull” of bad businesses has been long overdue and it’s time to pay the piper. Remember! They primarily failed, due to bad management, lacking compassion, concern, foresight!
The future is bright
Rest assured, to those who are unemployed. The companies still left standing after the pandemic will be far saner in the future then they have been in the past. Consequently, they will be desperate to quickly improve their profitability. “Sane” meaning good treatment of employees & customers alike, Leading to more moderate profits, limited Exec pay, smarter management in general, and improved quality of goods that we need and want.
Companies won’t be cherry picking people to re-hire. People will be remembering and cherry picking which company they want to work for! But don’t just take my word for it: PWC: The future of jobs
